How To: Spring Closet Edit

Spring is just around the corner….I can feel it! This is the perfect time to do a little closet edit, take inventory of what you have that you don’t need anymore and see if there is anything that your wardrobe could benefit from!

I’ll share a little step by step process that I always recommend to clients for an easy, seamless closet clean out and organization. We’ll also chat some things you might want to have on hand while you are cleaning and organizing!

Step One: Remove everything from your closet OR if that seems overwhelming section off your closet and do it in small increments. Whichever you choose, this will help you start with a clean slate!

Step Two: This is what will most likely take the longest for everyone. Assess each piece in your closet. Some things to keep in mind when going through piece by piece:

  • Since we’re getting ready for spring and summer, if you didn’t wear something last spring or summer it’s time to get rid of it.

  • Doesn’t fit? Get rid of it. I have wasted so much space (in my closet and my head) keeping things “in case I’ll fit back into it one day.” Get things that fit you and fit you well. Like I’ve said so many times before you’re #morethanasize.

  • On the fence? Take a few extra minutes to try it on and style it. That should help you decide!

Step Three: Make three piles: keep, donate and trash. Sometimes there are items that aren’t even worth donating (trash), others can be donated (find local places to donate to) or even consigned!

If there aren’t items you are going to keep or donate (or even maybe trash), reuse when you can! Old shirts make great cleaning rags, add things to your kids’ dress up bins, or use them for arts and crafts!

Step Four: Once you’ve gone through everything, go through the keep pile one more time just to make sure you do love everything in your ‘keep’ pile!

When adding things back into your closet, keep similar items together. I personally hang my dresses together, cardigans, skirts, etc. I know others who organize based on color as well. Do whatever works for you and makes things the easiest!

Shop Closet Organization Supplies

Adjustable Shoe Slot Organizer: These things are so cool, aren’t they? The double decker design allows you to store even more shoes in your closet. These particular ones have four different heights, depending on your specific shoe.

Storage Bins: If you don’t have a large closet, these can be great to store off season items!

All Purpose Labels and Sharpies: Even with clear storage bins it can be hard to remember or see what exactly is in each bin. All purpose labels do the trick! To label them, permanent markers!

Cascading Hangers: How cool are these hangers? Each hanger can hold up to 12 garments horizontally and 6 vertically, allowing you to hang so much more in your closet! I think these would be great for coat closets, too!

Space saving hangers really do make a huge difference. I used to just use the hangers that came with the clothes I bought (because hangers can be expensive!). I have slowly started swapping them out for space saving hangers and I can fit so many more things in my closet!

Contractor Trash Bags: I have cleaned out my closet and others’ enough to know that the larger the trash bag the better. These contractor bags are the best and biggest I have used!

Double Hang Closet Rod: These double hanging rods basically add a whole other closet rod without having to actually add one (drills, screws, etc).

Space Saving Skirt/Pant Hanger: Another easy way to save some space are simple pant/skirt hangers like these. They have non slip grips and are great for decluttering.

Shirt Stacker: This is something I didn’t know I needed! It takes up minimal space and allows you to store and stack more shirts that you normally would. This even works in drawers, too!
