Winter Capsule: How to Create Multiple Outfits with 6 Closet Staples

Capsules are hard for me-not something I tend to really do because I think it seems daunting and overwhelming to narrow down my whole wardrobe to only a handful of items.

BUT! I decided (with the help of my assistant and friend Trish) to dive right in and create a little winter capsule for all of you!

Some things to consider when creating a capsule or mini capsule wardrobe:

  • Create a color palette (I like to stick with neutrals)

  • No need to buy new pieces-goal is to use what you have

  • Start with your favorites and build around them

  • Try everything on

  • Do a closet clean out/edit prior to choosing items

  • Capsules can be as large as 30-40 items

  • Consider you lifestyle: work from home, office, social life, etc.

When creating this mini capsule, I didn’t take into consideration shoes/purses/accessories that much. My main focus was on the clothing and what could easily be mixed and matched.

While only 6 different outfits are shared here, there really are so many other combinations that could be created!

Let’s chat about the items included. Please note that these items are used as a simple guide…I tried to link exact and/or very similar items:

Striped Tee: I love the idea of including some sort of print. I thought a somewhat fitted black and white striped tee would be neutral enough to go with a lot of other items, but could also add a little bit of interest.

Non Distressed Skinny Jeans: I will be the first to admit I love a good pair of distressed jeans, but when it comes to a capsule, I think leaving the distressed jeans might be a good idea, especially if you will be wearing the denim in the workplace. What I do love about skinny jeans though is that they are the perfect style to be worn super casual, dressy or even casual workwear.

Boyfriend Cardigan: I am a fan of cardigans, so of course I would recommend adding one to your capsule wardrobe. Besides being a timeless closet staple, they are great for adding a finishing touch to your outfit, or even a perfect layering piece!

Cashmere Sweater: This is a bit of an investment, but I can assure you, it will last and it will never go out of style. This is another great item to wear by itself or layer! If you don’t want to invest in cashmere a simple sweater will work just fine. I have several options linked!

Black Midi Skirt: This is always a good option to have on hand, simply to just add variety but also for those of you that need to dress up a bit. I have something very similar to this skirt and I have worn mine with sneakers, booties and even heels!

Black Pixie Pant: Another closet staple whether you are doing a capsule wardrobe or not. Pair with a crisp button up and blazer for work, or a graphic tee and sneakers.
